Operational Communications

Operational communications are essential to achieving the organization’s objectives, which rely on staff engagement and versatility. At the heart of our operations, the work of Communications Agents plays a crucial role.

The tasks and profiles associated with this role vary from one base to another. It is possible to work from the head office in Québec City, from various operational bases across the province, and sometimes even directly on wildfire sites.

This is a seasonal position. The minimum number of hours worked is 40 hours per week, though this may vary depending on operational needs and wildfire activity.

Start and end dates differ from one base to another, but generally fall between early May and late September.

Job Description

The Communications Agent plays a key role in supporting operations. Their main responsibilities include compiling and producing reports based on incoming information, receiving and relaying critical updates, and providing logistical support to teams in the field.

The person in this role also contributes to wildfire detection by communicating with aircraft pilots. They monitor vehicle status and update various internal documents.

The position may also include handling public calls, data entry, and supporting managers in preparing reports.

Three types of positions are available:

  • Communications Agent / Ground Bases

  • Communications Agent / Message Centres

  • Communications Agent / Warehouse and Equipment Management

Required Qualifications

To apply for a Communications Agent position, candidates must:

  • Have a high school diploma (DES);

  • Possess computer skills and knowledge to effectively use the technological tools required for operational tracking and management;

  • Communicate clearly and accurately in French, both orally and in writing;

  • Demonstrate attention to detail and a methodical approach;

  • Be able to manage a high volume of information;

  • Remain calm under pressure and in emergency situations;

  • Be able to work as part of a team;

  • Be available to work evenings and weekends, as required;

  • Hold a valid driver’s licence;

  • Be 18 years of age or older.

Daily Tasks

The daily responsibilities of a Communications Agent vary depending on the operational base, but generally include:

  • Responding to public calls and relaying information to the appropriate personnel;

  • Contributing to wildfire detection by receiving information from detection aircraft pilots;

  • Maintaining frequent radio communications with pilots of the various aircraft operating for SOPFEU;

  • Relaying mission orders to airtanker pilots;

  • Entering workers’ timesheets for payroll processing;

  • Managing logistics related to lodging, meals, transportation, and other worker needs;

  • Providing administrative support to staff at the operational base.
